Munchausen, a duo formed by Parisian designers Simon Pillard and Philippe Rosetti, took a bold approach with their own kitchen by venturing to IKEA for the basic kitchen island and then spending the next week covering it with more than 20,000 pieces by another Scandinavian brand, Lego

Situated on the corner of Gore and Kerr streets fitzroy awakes the sleeping giant that is Gorker Gallery. An unassuming yellow brick warehouse complete with rollerdoor from the outside and a lofty contemporary exhibition space with wet polished concrete floors, white walls, track lighting and exposed industrial features on the inside. The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture - the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers "Galerie der Gegenwart". Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves - describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

A new epic book is about to drop " Kings Way : The beginnings of Australian Graffiti 1983-93" is a comprehensive book documenting the rise of Melbourne graf. Compiled by guys who know their stuff, this book has been 5 years in the making, and has over 1200 pics of some of the greatest stuff Melbourne has produced.

Published by Melbourne University Press (MUP) in hard cover with around 400 pages of walls, trains, interviews, artist profiles & the most amazing photo’s you’ll see from that era. It’s set for release in the very near future & should be in book stores by the middle of this year!!!

Here is a shot taken from behind the wave at Kirra beach in Queensland, it is an amazing shot and one that would be hard to do twice. There certainly is no time for making sure the settings are correct, its just point, shoot and hope that it turns out. Amazing how it only breaks in a couple of feet of water.

This interesting use of perspective in the Eureka Tower Carpark is the creation of Axel Peemoeller. If you stand at the right position the seemingly irregular shaped letters painted on the wall read perfectly. It won several international design awards.

Jim Lambie's Eight Miles High exhibition is in one word 'psychedelic'. The exhibition takes users on a visual journey through intense colours, straight lines and the distorition of space through perspective. Jim is a Scottish artist and the inspiration for the exhibition comes from Glasgow's club and music scene.

Melbourne Stencil Festival 08

The Melbourne Stencil festival opens Friday 1st August, with DJ and drinks to get the party started. As usual one of the highlights of the festival will include the Collaborative Live Spraying (2nd & 3rd Aug), where Artists and spectators are invited to get creative on the canvasses with international and interstate stencil artists. There will also be a kids workshop run by American artist Peat Wollaeger. On the 8th Peat will also showcase a series of short films about Stencil Art. And if you’re into plastic, then get yourself down to DeVinyl08, a special exhibition showing limited addition vinyl toys, will also run as part of the festival.

The Festival will be held at the Yarra Sculpture Gallery warehouse at 117 Vere Street, off Hoddle St, near the Collingwood Town Hall

Simon Pemberton, past National President of AGDA, has embarked on a documentary of 13 of Australia’s design icons. On 9-10 May 2008, Ken Cato, Mimmo Cozzolino, Garry Emery, Trevor Flett, Myriam Kin-Yee, David Lancashire, John Nowland, Brian Sadgrove, John Spatchurst, Neil Turner and Harry Williamson spent two days in Melbourne discussing the stories behind their work and the ideas and inspirations that frame the way they think (Ian Kidd and Barrie Tucker will be filmed in Adelaide to complete the group of 13). The documentary will bring to life an extraordinary body of work much of which helps define us as a nation and influence how we live our lives.

The filming has been supported by Swinburne University Film and Television School and the still photography by David Pidgeon and Andrew Ashton.

The project still needs financial support to enable the production of the final documentary and book. If you would like to support the documentation of Australia’s design history, please email Simon Pemberton at simon@graffiti.net.au
